Mount Aigoual, a paradise any time of the year !

Mount Aigoual is remarkable for its panorama, its climate and the weather observatory built between 1887 and 1894 with great difficulty because of the harsh climate, on original plans of a medieval castle, with a powerful crenellated tower on which was installed the big orientation table. This is currently the last mountain weather observatory in France inhabited throughout the year, and in recent years it provides a space for discovery and entertainment about the weather.

Mount Aigoual is a mountain located in the southern Massif Central, on the boundary between the Gard and Lozere. It peaks at 1,565 meters. The mountain top is generally covered with snow from mid-November to April. Its slopes have very different faces: Toward the west and northwest, rounded ridges, with gentler slopes are separated by Causses'gorges and canyons of Tarn river. To the east and southeast, above the sources of Hérault river, the slopes are very steep. Direct elevation, one of the largest of the Massif Central, reaches 1250 m. The route follows the long laces on the north side of the plateau Espérou leading to the small village of Esperou (1250 m), where you can also come from Le Vigan through the mountain pass of Minier at 1260 m; then it joins the mountain pass of the Sereyrède (1,300 m), crosses the Col de Prat-Peyrot where stands a family ski resort (1,380 m) to reach the top after 28 km long ascent .

Galore of hiking and biking trails.
One of the most famous hiking path in Mount Aigoual is the rise of the 4000 steps leading from Valleraugue to reach the observatory at 1567 meters above sea level and more than 1200 m in altitude.

The winter sports resort of Prat-Peyrot is located on the slopes of Aigoual. It is the largest ski resort in the Cevennes. The resort is usually open from December to late March / early April. The domain consists of 9 km of pists for downhill skiing with 13 lifts and 60 km cross-country skiing (including a race track). There is also a toboggan run to the delight of little ones.
